Why train your horse at Girsonfield?

Over the years we have had horses in training and have trained our own horses that we have bred to Point to Point. Three years ago I decided that I would like to become a professional trainer and thus be able to offer a full 'package' for horses to grow up here and then take the next step to training. Having a son who wanted to be a jockey made it seem all the more important. I felt we had all the correct facilities, lots of hills and land for fitness, knowledge of the horse and what makes them perform, as well as experience from our days Point to Pointing and learning from other trainers.

A full racing licence is not the easiest development to achieve. Following various courses I was given a permit to train, this meant we were prohibited from training client's horses, but were fully able to train and race our own, not ideal as it meant we were very limited in what we could do. However once we achieved a certain amount of success I was allowed to apply for a full licence.  In June 2013 I was granted a full licence and can now train for Flat and National Hunt.

The horses that we have achieved success with have been the home bred 'Dun to Perfection' by our own stallion Endoli, out of a grand-daughter of the famous Dun Gay Lass, owned by Phil Claxton. His first races were not good, being pulled up! I remember telling Steven Mulqueen who was riding him at Sedgefield "if you have to, carry him over the line, just finish a race". He was 4th and 4th again next time out, before making a  40 / 1 win at Carlisle look like the easiest thing in the world.

Definite Appeal came to us from our Irish agent Edward Daly. He had won Point to Points and placed under rules. 'Nigel' owes us nothing having won point-to-points and then going on to win two chases and being placed 6 times out of his 12 runs for us.

We still have a lot of work to do with our own young horses. As Dun to Perfection proved, it does not happen overnight. However we are delighted to have the backing and support of our owners who have bought horses for us to train. To take a quote from our owner Rose "onwards and upwards".
